I have had several of Chris Carter‘s Robert Hunter books on my TBR pile for a while so I was thrilled at the opportunity to join the tour for Written in Blood. It was very easy to follow the set-up despite not having read the earlier books so don’t worry about jumping straight in.

Written in Blood is a gripping and gruesome serial killer thriller set in Los Angeles and it is not for the faint-hearted or squeamish. I thoroughly enjoyed (if that is the right word!) the story, although some of the dialogue was a little stiff at times. The plot gets started right away and is fast-paced throughout, with the tension rarely dropping below 100%.

Angela is a sympathetic, if prickly, character and I felt for her. I did feel I got to know Robert Hunter to some extent but would probably get to know him better in the earlier books, which I plan to go back to.

Some of the extremely specific details seemed unnecessary to me – the exact minutes that a journey took or millimetres an envelope was, the exact minutes and seconds a task took, the precise location of a building – each time I encountered an example of this it interrupted the flow and took me out of the story.

The story though is great, a high-octane roller coaster ride and extremely entertaining. It reminded me in parts of The Silence of the Lambs, the Ragdoll/Hangman books and even Die Hard with A Vengeance so if you enjoyed any of them then please give Written in Blood your full attention. I will definitely be starting from the beginning of the series.

Thank you to Simon & Schuster for my copy of Written in Blood and to Random Things Tours for my spot.
