#BlogTour The Retreat by Sarah Pearse #TheRetreat @SarahVPearse @TransworldBooks @RandomTTours #BookReview

Hello! Today I’m pleased to welcome you to JuliaPalooza for my stop on the Blog Tour for The Retreat by Sarah Pearse, which is available to order now (links below).

About the book

An eco-wellness retreat has opened on an island off the coast of Devon, promising rest and relaxation – but the island itself, known locally as Reaper’s Rock, has a dark past. Once the playground of a serial killer, it’s rumoured to be cursed.

DS Elin Warner is called to the retreat when a young woman’s body is found on the rocks below the yoga pavilion, in what seems to be a tragic fall. But the victim wasn’t a guest – she wasn’t meant to be on the island at all.

When a man drowns in a diving incident the following day, Elin starts to suspect that there’s nothing accidental about these deaths. But why would someone target the retreat – and who else is in danger?

Elin must find the killer – before the island’s history starts to repeat itself . . .

I’d had my eye on Sarah Pearse‘s first book, The Sanatorium, for some time so when I joined the blog tour for The Retreat, it was the perfect time to bump it up the TBR and it did not disappoint (more on that later). I highly recommend both books but you should definitely read them in order. Partly for ongoing background and partly because there are minor spoilers for the first book in the second.

The Retreat has a pulse-pounding prologue, which sets the scene for a creepy story in this luxurious setting. The book is well plotted and gripping and the mystery is clever and entertaining; there are frequent twists and turns and a real sense of jeopardy. I like a ‘closed-circle’ whodunit and I think I suspected everyone at some point!

The story focuses on Hana and her holidaying family group, with their unusual set up, shared history and simmering tensions. Elin herself is a fully rounded character, although perhaps a touch introspective for me, but she’s been through a lot so I’ll let her off! Steed is a nice addition to the characters we already knew.

I really raced through The Retreat and the ending was satisfactory. There were also definitely a couple of hints that there is more to come from Elin et al so I really look forward to reading the next instalment.

Thank you to the publisher for my copy of the book and to Random Things Tours for my spot on the tour.
