The Devil’s Work by Mark Edwards
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was creepy, chilling and compelling – so thank you to NetGalley, Mark Edwards and Thomas & Mercer for giving me the chance to read this book, in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed reading this book (my first by Mark Edwards) and finished it within 24 hours. A disturbing prologue is followed by a few more sedate scene-setting chapters until mystery, anxiety and insidious paranoia start to take over the life of our lead character, back-to-work-mum, Sophie. The fast-paced story jumps between two time-frames – a plot device which I like and is used well here – and builds a real sense of urgency and peril.
The writing is good and the ending ties up all the loose ends. I’m still not entirely sure I really warmed to any of the characters, but the pacing and plotting make this a really good, sinister mystery thriller. It certainly won’t be my last by Mark Edwards.
