Closer is another compelling psychological thriller from the powerhouse that is K.L. Slater.

It’s got everything you could possibly want, from domestic noir, pre-teen angst, a potentially wicked stepmother, secret dark pasts, multiple viewpoint chapters and creepy, anonymous flashbacks.

After a mysterious prologue it does take a while for the main mystery/thriller part of the story to really get going, but Slater’s writing is so very readable that the individual chapters still fly by.

Emma, our protagonist, is believable and can be at times both heart-breaking and frustrating. Character support comes from ‘ex’-husband Shaun, mum Val, daughter Maisie and boss-slash-ex-husband’s-new-partner, the mysterious Joanne, all of whom are fleshed out and have their own voice.

Several engaging subplots, from past and present, entwine to maintain the tension, and there is a good reveal and a great final twist. This is a highly recommended read, from its stark opening to its bold and brutal ending.
