Hattie Goes to Hollywood is the first in a new cosy murder mystery series by Caroline James.

Hattie is an engaging lead who wastes no time after moving to Hollywood in romancing the local landlord, renovating her new/old house and picking up the local gossip. Caroline James has created a varied crop of both charming and charmless resident characters and describes hot summer life in a cosy village, masking the tensions running below the surface.

Hattie manages to both don her deer-stalker and turn sleuth and to get herself into various scrapes and embarrassments as she settles back into village life. The set-up reminded me a little of both MC Beaton‘s Agatha Raisin and Simon Brett‘s Fethering mysteries, although Hattie is far less prickly and far more likeable than Agatha or Carol. Plus, I loved Drake! 🙂

If you enjoy a cosy mystery with a feisty lead, comic escapades and some sexy shenanigans you will enjoy this promising start to a new series.

Thank you to Caroline James for my copy of Hattie Goes to Hollywood and to Rachel Gilbey of Rachel’s Random Resources for my spot on the tour.
